Structured Quilting with a Mirrored Border Design
Feb 19, 2025
This quilt was made by Loni and I knew it was going to be gifted to Jackie (both members of my extended family whom I love and admire). So when the time to design and quilt this quilt came I struggled with what to do. Jackie is someone who considers herself particularly 'fancy' but that doesn't mean we aren't classy. So I decided to allow Loni's sophisticated colour palette to lead the design and make something 'fancy'.
I started my designing as usual, but struggled to stick to my plan as I began quilting the quilt, I had the basic structures figured out (the mirror effect of the border) but when it came time to add in the outside details of my plan I balked.
It just felt a little flat. So I tried making it a little more simple, sometimes simplifying is the answer.
Nope, I was wrong. Time to try something more dramatic.
After a long while here is where I landed. I hadn't done a design like this and I loved it. As you can see I am designing on the machine, which is uncommon for me. Usually, I always have a pretty solid plan before mounting, but maybe because I knew the people involved I struggled a little more than normal. Here is what the border looked like, I LOVE it and it really set the tone for the rest of the quilt.
I did have to revisit my other plans to make sure that everything was cohesive. And I did make quite a few ajustments.
I do like the contrasting shapes of pebbles with Mctavishing.
I did also have to try and not over quilt this quilt (which I sometimes do stuggle with), because we didn't want to make the quilt too stiff. Here is a photo of hte mirror effect of the border which I thought was pretty brilliant and something I think I want to keep exploring.
I think that I did a pretty good job to help make Loni's vision for Jackie come together. I think this quilt is modern, beauitful and classy just like Jackie. Thanks for having me be apart of this project Loni.
