Blocks Series - Modern Feathers - Block 1
Apr 12, 2023Woohoo, here we go again! Okay, okay, I know. I didn't quilt the scrappy version of this pattern on YouTube, but I did quilt it. But in all honesty, it just didn't fit the modern aesthetic I was going for. Don't get me wrong I love the quilt and I like scrappy quilts too, but this is about modern quilting and this quilt just didn't fit the brief in my eyes. Here is a photo of the original quilt that I quilted for this series.
See, there really isn't anything wrong with this quilt, but it just didn't thrill me, or compare to the first modern quilt. So I decided to piece another one.
This colour palette I decided would be easier to film too.
But I also decided to switch up some of my designs too, I used ribbon candy in the scrappy one and I didn't really get that "modern" feel to it. So I re-evaluated my designs and started from scratch, and I'm super happy I did. I think that I really did make feathers fit into this modern quilt in a way that keeps it fresh while still being pretty. So here was the concept drawing I had for the quilt.
And the final Stitched result
Just to be a little overcritical and my own worst critic I really shouldn't have quilted anything in the oval centerpiece of the motifs. I think that ultimately it made the block a little busier than I wanted. But like heck I was about to take it out! Hahaha. Another fairly frustrating mistake I made and the quilt police can come at me; for the white fabric, I used a sheet I bought at the store for fabric... you can see how it is kinda stretching and not laying flat like the green and grey. I understand my fopa here, but sometimes we have to work with what we have and this quilt is for display purposes (the backing is an old sheet from the closet if you really want to know alllll the dirty details, actually we are starting to run out of sheets for the beds lolololol).
When I finished quilting this block I was still really happy with the direction I was going and I can't wait to share the rest with you. Here are some links to the YouTube Video, pattern details, and some other random details.
YouTube Video (please like and subscribe it really helps me, and maybe one day I will use real proper fabric hahaha)
The machine is an older Handi Quilter Avante with a stitch regulator.
I am using Glide Thread in the colour white.
The marking pen I use is a Kering blue water-soluble marker (any blue one will do).
I used my Rocket Ruler by Silly Moon Quilt Co. my BFF from the Quilted Pineapple and a 4" circle ruler (no longer being made but there are a lot of nested circle rulers out there)
