Let's talk labyrinth quilts. Everyone loves an optical illusion and the Labyrinth Walk Quilt Pattern by The Guilty Quilter is probably one of the most accessible optical illusion quilt patterns available. If you want a copy of this pattern you can find it on Amazon here:

I have been lucky enough to have quilted two of these quilts (both coming to me from the Cranbrook/Jaffy, BC area).

As I planned the quilting designs, I wanted to add to the optical illusion. So I decided to stick with clean lines and pebbles (that seems to be my jam!). I added some diagonal lines that echoed the 45-degree angle created by the piecing. I then stitched vertical piano key lines in the black areas, it's hard to see the quilting when we stitch black thread on black fabric.

Finally, I added pebbles to the dark gray areas. These ideas are not revolutionary, they are pretty simple and have been done before (no need to reinvent the wheel). But where I decided to "go the extra stitch" was to give the dark gray areas an echo. This simple idea added an extra layer of separation and in my opinion more depth.

The border appears complicated but it is simply a bubble swirl chain with pebbles on one side and piano keys on the other.  I decided to switch it up and do the piano keys on the inside and the pebbles on the outside.  This still allows for squaring and is a little different.

I have always wanted to make this quilt, but I'm just a little too busy quilting.... Oh, the irony. I'll have my time one day to make all the quilts, but for now, I'll just enjoy all of the wonderful and varied quilt tops that get sent to me.

I really love this gray colourway, it is something that every non-quilter person appreciates.  The pattern is very clever.... hmmmm, maybe I will order it....

Thanks for reading!  I mentioned in the video last week that I was coming down the home stretch of the Modern Quilting with Rulers course! I am finishing up some diagrams and writing out all of the block and border lessons.

The course begins at the beginning of ruler quilting for anyone who isn't too confident with rulers, I show some simple hand positions to help you stay in control of your straight and curved rulers.  We start with piano keys.

But we don't terry too long, and very quickly ramp up into some very detailed blocks and border designs.

Here are some of the topics I cover in the course:

  • Beginner ruler work and basic free-motion pearl chains, blunt piano key, and matchstick designs.
  • Embellishing Piano Keys
  • Cross Hatch
  • Dot to Dot (and how to embellish)
  • Curved Dot to Dot
  • Square in Square Borders
  • Circle rulers or other cut-out rulers
  • Ghost quilting.... and more.

I show all of my marking secrets!  You don't have to stitch along if you don't want to.  If you have some quilting and ruler experience use this course as a reference and inspiration to help you break out of your usual rut.

I will be contacting people on my email list first when the course is ready, sending out a special offer to those folks first.  If you would like to join the email list (not spammy, once a week, no bull, just the details) you can do that here:

EMAIL LIST

You will own the course forever and have access anytime you want to come back and have a refresher.  I am available for questions and extra instruction if needed.  There is also the opportunity to purchase a panel to stitch out all of the content on your own.  Or you can follow the printable diagram and use a practice piece of muslin if you like!

I haven't come to a price point yet, but I'm guessing somewhere in the $300 CAD range.  The course is 8 hours of intense well-edited, clear videos, with printable diagrams.

Thanks so much for reading this far and I am really looking forward to the course launch and to know what everyone thinks.
