A Nebula Quilt

2024 custom quilting nebula quilt tula pink Apr 03, 2024

Diving into the cosmos with a throwback to a stellar quilt experience—quilting the Nebula quilt (Jaybird Quilts) crafted by the talented Gail Miller. I quilted this quilt quite a while back but as I perused my quilt library this quilt reminded me of my recent camping trip.

We had a rare +20C weekend forecasted a couple of weekends back and I just couldn't let it slip by. I packed up the van and Jeremy and I hit the road off down some goat trail. It was an awesome time and we spent quite a while looking at the stars (my inspiration).
Nebulas are celestial clouds of gas and dust in space, and they are truly wonders of nature. This being the inspiration behind the pattern by Jaybird Quilts is quite special. Gail used the vibrant and lively Tula Pink fabrics from the True Colors Line, Gail requested that I quilt it like Angela Walters had done.

While Angela Walters set an incredibly high bar with her quilting of a Nebula quilt, I couldn't resist imparting a bit of my style to the mix. The challenge lay in finding the right balance—adding a personal flavour without overshadowing the brilliance of Angela's original ideas.

Rulers played a key role in bringing this celestial quilt to life. My trusty BFF ruler from Quilted Pineapple, along with various curves and round rulers, helped me navigate the design. A standout among them all is the Rocket Ruler by Silly Moon Quilt Co., probably my all-time favourite ruler.  If you want to give this ruler a try you can use this code for 10% off (this is an affiliate code): creativecurve2024

Oner challenge was choosing the perfect thread colours to match the pretty Tula Pink palette. As a self-professed thread-a-holic, my thread of choice is Glide in my studio. The sheen, quality, and wide array of available colours make Glide my go-to thread for quilting. While acknowledging the plethora of quality threads in the quilting world, Glide aligns perfectly with my creative needs.

I'm pretty sure not too many folks read this blog but those who do do get much better photos!

Beyond all the technical mumbo jumbo, I love this quilt for being a big bed quilt. I'm just a big sucker for a big quilt.

I have one more confession, I tried to use AI to help me flesh out this blog post.... AI came up with this last paragraph, and I laughed so hard I just had to include it:

"So, as we journey through the stitches of this Nebula quilt, let's marvel at the cosmic inspiration that transcends fabric and thread. The universe has its own way of weaving tales, and in this quilt, we catch a glimpse of the celestial dance that unfolds in the vastness of space. Join me in exploring the cosmic tapestry—one quilt stitch at a time. 🌌✨ "
-Computer-generated drivel, hahahaha.

Thanks so much for making it to the end of this post!
