Block Series - Modern Style - Block 1

This post is coming a little late, but better than never!  I have been working pretty hard to get all my ducks in a row to bring this cool series to YouTube. Here is a link to the full video.

I want to show how traditional quilt blocks can still be modern and interesting. I also want to show how using the same designs over and over again can help create a cohesive quilt that makes sense of sampler quilts.  

I designed a traditional style sampler quilt to showcase my ideas, I also decided to design a panel because sometimes you just don't have time to piece a whole top!  If you are interested in the panel or the pattern (because of course I wrote that too!) Here is a link.

Before I start any quilt I always doodle.  Usually, I take a photo of the quilt top with my tablet and just use the built-in photo editing software that allows me to doodle.  I came up with a basic idea and outline for each block and decided to fill it in as I went with my chosen designs that would echo throughout the quilt.  Here is the concept doodle for Block 1.

I love this block and think it is super cool.  So as I go along through the next 11 blocks you will see some similarities.  Distinctly the double frame in the colour sections of the blocks and the pebble fill.  You will see matchstick quilting, pebbles, ovals, and blunt piano keys.

The machine is an older Handi Quilter Avante with a stitch regulator.

I am using Glide Thread in the colour white. 

The marking pen I use is a Kering blue water-soluble marker (any blue one will do)

Rulers are Rocket by Silly Moon Quilt Co. and a 4" circle (discontinued from Sparrow Quilt Co. but any other 4" circle ruler will work).
